What’s so Special About Google’s First Page?
If you are new to search engine optimization, or are looking over an SEO proposal and deciding if it’s worth the expense, you might be tempted to consider whether it’s actually that big of a deal to show up on the first page of Google’s search listings anyway. Could it really make that much of a difference to a company just to show up a little more often on the Internet?
Believe it or not, it could – and probably more than you think.
That’s because the average searcher, and especially one who’s looking for a particular product or service, doesn’t spend a lot of time on each particular query. They want to find what they’re searching for, of course, but they typically won’t go five or 10 pages deep to locate it… they’ll just browse the first page or two, click on a few of the links, and then enter a new search term if the results are unsatisfactory.
Different studies have produced different numbers, but it’s generally accepted that only about 20% of all searchers move beyond the first 15 results. And, with Google’s recent implementation of their “auto complete” feature, which steers even more searchers towards the most popular results, your chances of being noticed farther away from the well-being search paths are getting even smaller.
If you’re still skeptical about the benefits of search engine optimization, trying using Google’s keyword search tool at: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Simply type in a few of the words or phrases you think people would search to find a company like yours (or wish they would). In return, you’ll get not only the number of inquiries for that word or phrase for the month, but also of others that are close, and how often they were searched.
If you’re like a lot of people we start working with, those figures might surprise you. No matter what business you deal in, there’s a good chance that there are lots and lots of people out there looking to find you. If you feel like it would be a great thing to get noticed by more of them, then you just answered your own question and figured out why Google’s first page is such a big deal.
